Hem and Haw
Hem is one of the tiny people in the book who struggles with change. When the cheese disappears, Hem gets angry and refuses to leave the spot where it used to be. He doesn’t want to explore or try anything new because he’s afraid of the unknown. Hem represents the part of us that likes to stay comfortable and resist change, even when it’s needed. His story reminds us that fear can hold us back if we don’t learn to let go and move forward.
Haw on the other hand was the other tiny person, at first, he’s just as scared as Hem, but after waiting and worrying for a while, Haw starts to laugh at himself and realizes that sitting still won’t bring the cheese back. He decides to face his fears and go search for new cheese. As he explores, Haw learns important lessons about courage, flexibility, and self-discovery. He shows that when we stop being afraid of change, we open the door to new opportunities and happiness.
Sniff and Scurry
Sniff is one of the two mice who uses his sharp sense of smell to notice change early. He’s always alert and paying attention to what’s happening around him. When the cheese disappears, Sniff quickly senses it and gets ready to move on. He represents people who stay aware, flexible, and ready to adapt before problems even start.
Scurry is the other mouse, and he’s all about taking action. The moment the cheese is gone, he doesn’t overthink, he just runs off to find more! Scurry represents people who move fast, try new things, and learn by doing. He teaches that instead of wasting time complaining or worrying, we can get up, start exploring, and find new opportunities. Scurry’s quick and positive attitude shows that progress often comes from simply taking the first step.
